Optical Cable Help. What kind of optical cable can I use for my PS3 sound?

Pattie Vold: There is only one kind of optical cable, not multiple. The cable will "snap" in to place and can only be installed one way (straight portion on top). If the cable is loose, either the cable isn't connected correctly, or the input is broken. Again, make sure there isn't a cover on the cable. If you look at the picture to the link you supplied, there is a small clear cover in the center of the cable... that should be taken off before being installed. Now to why it may not be working. When you say you set up the PS3 to "5.1", I assume you mean you checked both Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. Your receiver has to be able to decode DTS in order to work. If your receiver can't decode DTS, you won't hear anything. Also, the audio is sent as Bitstream or PCM. Not all receivers can decode PCM, and if it can, not all can decode all of the PCM options. You need to make sure your reciever can output PCM. If your reciever can output PCM, then you need to make s! ure the parts you have checked can be decoded by your receiver. It can get very complicated, so here is the best way to set it up if you are not sure what your receiver decodes. Pick Dolby Digital 5.1 (only pick DTS 5.1 if your receiver has a DTS logo on it). Make sure that only 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz are checked under PCM. If this doesn't work, then make sure your audio is set to Bitstream instead of PCM (XMB > Settings > Video Settings > BD Audio Ouput Format (Optical Digital) > Bitstream). Give me the model number of your receiver, and I can better help you, if the above doesn't help....Show more

Giovanna Sherlin: I used to work in the home theater department at Best Buy and to my knowledge digital optical cables only come in one size. There shouldnt be any different cable to use for your ps3 either. Your receiver and ps3 will use the same optical cable. There aren't any special optical cables that I know of that you have to use with the ps3

Rivka Killme! r: Maaan i just went through this with my Consoles. (Xbox360 a! nd PS3) so im fresh on this lol Your Home theater system SHOULD have a S/PDIF port somewhere for INPUT. because your PS3 only has OUTPUT. you cant route anything through the PS3. thats for sure. Your RED & WHITE cable are called RCA cables... Those are Analog. Optical Cable (Or S/PDIF) are Digital cables. Converting is going to be through a Audio Receiver (Which your Home Theater sound system should have one, its where all the speakers connections go to.) It would have helped if you had the model number of your Theater system listed so i could have told you a proper set up. But Sony DVD player and PS3 are going to be for OUTPUT (All sounds should be directed to your home theater system where the "INPUT" is.) You will also have to make sure that your settings on your Home theater system is properly channelled to pick up the correct input it is receiving from the PS3 or Sony DVD player. If your set up is done correctly but sound is coming out surrond, make sure your PS3 is se! nding it out properly (so turn your ps3 on and make sure you go to sound settings to properly configure it) Hope this gives you a starting point. Best of luck....Show more

Victor Macallister: Are you sure you firmly inserted the cable? The cables should "snap" into the input and they only fit into the input one way. Once its snapped it, it should not be moving at all.No, there is no different optical cable. They are all the same.
