Home-schooling?

Lenard Ginyard: Go to "homeschooling.gomilpitas.com" (Anne Zeise's website). She has listed all the laws and legalities by state. She also has a "web guide to the best and most useful sites and articles about homeschooling."I homeschool our daughters (8 & 12). We also belong to a homeschool cooperative, in which two parents are teachers in the public school district (they DON'T talk about it at work). Also, do some research. Don't trust the opinion of a teacher who is only exposed to those kids who are constantly pulled in and out of the public school system, with the excuse that their (unstable) family was 'homeschooling' them. You can see why some of the teachers are hesitant about the whole idea, since that's the kind of 'homeschooler' they usually see....Show more

Timmy Bustard: http://www.hslda.org/laws/?State=NVthere is a link to an overview to the home school laws in NevadaPublic schools get government funding by attendance and how many pupils are in the scho! ol, Teachers do not want to loose students to home school because they loose funding. the HSLDA is a huge help with homeschooling, i check their website all the time... and while you are thinking about homeschooling look up home school curriculum's and see if it is something you can do & afford....Show more

Isreal Kochheiser: Check out the HSLDA (home school legal defense association). They can point you in the right direction for each state as well as any legal guidelines to follow. A great source of info. It's almost better not to mention homeschooling to the teachers. I'm a former teacher myself, and most of my former co-workers think of me as a traitor. Do what's best for your children, regardless of others' opinions.

Idell Syed: You might want to check with some local church-schools to see about curriculum and requirements. Usually they'll know of some people in the church who home-school their kids, and they can get you started in your search for info! rmation.Lots of public schools don't like discussing home-scho! oling as a possibility for kids because they lose some of their state funding when kids don't attend....Show more

Malcom Bourek: Connections Academy is a virtual Public school. They are just getting started in Nevada for the 2007-2008 school year.It is a free pubic school "without walls" They send you all the books and everything you need for free. Plus you have bi-weekly phone calls with you child's teacher(s) It is a great program, with a great curriculum. We have been with the program now for two years and have never had a problem with the teachers. Check out their web page at www.connectionsacademy.com...Show more

Jefferson Sarson: I am a homeschooled kid (11th grade) and so far my experiences lean towards my belief that homeschooled kids are significantly more balanced. I also believe that we are less stressed and concentrate better on school work due to the abscence of social stresses within the building that I find completely unneccesary as long as positi! ve social outlets are still within reach. One cannot shield their child from negative social situations though, and in many ways it would be unwise to do so as you cannot protect them forever. But, if you are considering homeschooling because you believe they will get a better education in doing so I would encourage you to continue looking into it. I hope your children do well....Show more

Jestine Osumi: The teachers are trained to dislike the possibility of home-education. I have read many publications of the NEA and our own State Ed. Association. The written material is geared toward strong discouragement of home-schooling. You are better off not discussing it with them. It would be like going into McDonald's and trying to discuss Burger King. Or going to a college football game and sitting with the opposition. It's hard to cheer for your team from within the ranks of the competition.Sadly, many (not all) teachers view home-schooling as competition. Others are! okay with it. I know many certified teachers that opt to home-school ! their own children AND still understand that parents are very capable of raising their children while educating them at home even without a degree in teaching. My husband works in the public schools and most of his co-workers know that we are a home-schooling family. They don't bother us about it.Others have recommended www.hslda.org -- it is a good place to start. You will find links to home-school groups in Nevada. You may also like what you find at www.nheri.org -- it is a National research organization. They present a wonderful array of infomation and stats about home-schooling.The best thing to do is keep a smile on your face and be confident! If you are in a situation where you must discuss your decision with a teacher -- go ahead and tell them that you think that your child needs one on one time in all of the areas of academics and that you are prepared to take on the task. Tell them not to worry because you intend to see it through to the end and that you will ut! ilize resources that are available within the homeschool community. Let them see that you are committed to doing what you know is best for your child.Don't worry about all of the disparaging arguments. They are easy to overcome....Show more

Lester Haschke: The reason the teachers get bent out of shape is because the school gets paid per kid. Less kids means less money for that school. The other reason is they feel that if you did not spend all those years in school that you are not qualified to teach. I have noticed that home schooled kids are pretty well balanced. I do not home school because we can not afford for me not to work. Good luck with your choice

Stanton Villao: School teachers are usually the worst to talk to about homeschooling. For one, they usually know nothing about it, which means that whatever they will say about it is likely to be ignorant bias. The best place to get information is from homeschooling support groups. The laws at HSLDA ar! e a nice starting point, but people who actually homeschool under those! laws will be helpful in many ways. For associations, just do a search for things likeNevada homeschoolerNevada homeschoolingNevada homeschool support groupand so on....Show more
