Does rum cook off like beer does?

Kelly Bistodeau: Yeah- it should. :-)

Elfreda Grossen: I believe any alcohol when brought to the right tempuratue will cook off the alcohol.

Rufus Plough: Yes. The buzz of the alcohol wears off when you cook it

Bryant Pillitteri: Yes. Any type of alcohol does this when heat is applied.

Ermelinda Stalnaker: yes. all alcohol cooks off.

Coleman Ocegueda: sure, the alcohol will cook dinner out, so all you're left is the flavour. I make a stew that has one bottle of dark beer in it all of the time. My 2 year old eats it and it is high-quality

Toby Women: Actually all the alcohol does not cook off. In spite of the fact that all previous answers think it does. The only alcohol that cooks off id the alcohol on the surface of the product cooking. This is true for wine, beer, and "hard liquors" rum, vodka, etc. I know I'm the only one giving this answer so far but it can be verified as correct by going to the food network web site.

Fritz ! Sisomphou: Whether alcohol remains in a finished dish, and how much, depends on the cooking method. When foods are cooked under high heat for a long period of time, such as soups and stews, the majority of the alcohol evaporates out. Pure alcohol boils at 173 degrees F., a lower temperature than water (212 degrees F.). Thus, you will find that recipes intending for some of the alcohol to remain will have instructions to add the alcohol near the end of the cooking process so it will not boil out. Obviously, uncooked recipes will retain the vast majority of the alcohol. Some may be worried about serving a dish cooked with alcohol to a child, yet alcohol is a naturally-occurring substance in many foods, particularly fruits with a high sugar content such as very ripe apples. Keep in mind that the amount used in a recipe is usually very minimal and is spread out over a large volume of food, comparatively-speaking. It is a personal decision, of course. Still, it is a good idea fo! r those on anti-abuse medication for alcohol problems to avoid! foods cooked with alcohol....Show more

Arleen Bussing: Yea, I think all alcohol does
